This is a very much make up as I go pattern. I have unravelled it many times when it did not look quite right with sizing.
For the bulk of the patter, crown and sides of hat, I used 3mm crochet hook. Then switch to using 2mm for the brim when doing single crochets.

For this hat, I am only estimating the yardage used. It did not seem much was used, as I still have little bit left, enough for a smaller beanie maybe.

yarn used:60% acrylic 40% nylon Patons Australia Big Baby 8ply
I made five windflower square motifs as per pattern, join - the squares as I crochet along, with slip stitch for the four motifs in a ring. The with the top or crown square motif, I did chains to link it up, in addition to the patterns required on the fifth round on the working square. The chains I did were: ch 2, ss, ch then dc to the working square or dc clusters where required on the corners.
For the hat’s brim, I crochet 16 treble stitches all around on round 1. No turning required at end of rounds. For round two and three, just do ch 2, 1 x fptr in first st, 1 tr in each of next 2 stitches, just repeating this sequence till I get it all around.
Round 4 of the hat’s brim, I used picot edge stitch to finish it off. Ch 1, sc in each of next 4 st, on 4th sc, do 4 ch, then back into sc sp to make the picot. Repeat this sequence * till the end, just finish off with sc to the end, then ss to ch 1 if beginning ch1. I had 23 picot edges around the hat’s brim.
Final hat measurements laid flat:
9.5” width x 7.5” height
circumference of hat: 17.5” to suit a 12 month old to 2 year old toddler.
Each square motif measures 4” x 4” or 100 cm x 100cm.

Update on my first stash of yarn since the stash-buster challenge

I have slowly run down my first stash of yarn since starting the challenge.  But to be honest, I have since got more yarns for other crochet projects as I could not resist not getting any more crochet yarns.  Have request for an adult throw blanket which I have not started yet.  Then I am planning to crochet some winter beanies and scarves as Christmas gifts for relatives who will be experiencing winter in December and January soon.  This will be the first time for handmade crochet gifts for Christmas giving.

Stash-buster challenge crochet project# 8, woman's hat with a brim

Finished size measurements:  brim 2.5 " wide, 4.5" height from crown, 6"/15.5cm diammeter.
Adult size: suit 19"-23" head circumference.  This hat will give lots of stretch due to the open layout, crossed stitches and v-stitches used.

With this hat, I have used up this variegated colour yarn, it took up 1 skein of it.
The hat's brim, I used a cream coloured yarn.

Crochet hook 4mm and 8 ply or DK yarns used.

Made a cluster circle top, then open mesh and v stitches for sides followed by single crochet for the brim. Quite a big and roomy hat.  Great for spring or autumn and maybe even winter in Perth.

My stash-buster challenge - Work in progress project #2 granny square scarf

It has been weeks now since I started using up my scrap yarns for this little granny square scarf, which I think I will convert to a throw blanket instead.  Just waiting to use up more yarns for other stuff before I get into the little scraps of colours for this project.

So far, this is what it looks like after 2 rows and 20 squares length.  Each granny square motif measures roughly 10cm x 10cm or 4"x4".

Stash - buster challenge crochet project #4 - lacy flower motifs in off white - still work in progress

Hello, for those of you wondering what ever has happened to this lacy flower poncho I started several weeks ago... Well, been hibernating for a while on this.  Still a work in progress....

I have pretty much finished joining the motifs as I go, but am still contemplating on how to give it a nice neckline border around the poncho.  If anyone has a suggestion or pattern to share, please feel free to show me.

Stash-buster challenge project - crochet woman's headband and ear warmer

Crochet project:  The lacy four square motif headband and winter ear warmer (adult size)

You will need:

4mm size crochet hook
a black button
sewing needle and white thread
Cream acrylic yarn, 8 ply or DK, Moda Vera Marvel (from Spotlight)

A quick and easy crochet for beginner to intermediate skill level?

The pattern is taken from a published book called 201 crochet motifs, blocks, projects and ideas by Melody Griffiths.  Pattern is called "four square".

Stitch patterns used:  ch, ss, dc, htr, tr, tr2tog and tr3tog

Once the first motif was finished, I put it aside and then use join-as-you-go method to link the second motif to the first on one side.  You can start linking the outer most lacy corner when you crochet the round 4 on starting the third side of the motif.  Make four motifs to fit an adult head.

To join the lacy corner, I did ch 2, ss to the corner of first motif, then another ch 2 back onto the second motif.  Where only three chains are to be made for the motif, I did a link to the first motif by making ch 1, ss to lacy side, ch 1 back onto the second motif.

The flap to secure the headband has two  button holes and a loop to allow for tighter fit around the head for smaller head circumference.  To make the flap, I made two rows of 9 tr, then button holes and a loop of 12 chains from memory, just have to suit your button. Then sc all around the 12 chains before fastening off.

To finish off this headband, single crochet all around, 3 sc each lacy chain and 5 sc around the corners.

Finished measurements:
51cm length x 11cm height.  Each four square motif measures 11cm x 11cm roughly, including the single crochet border all around.

Stash-buster crochet project - woman's headband with elastic

Hello there,

It's been very wet and windy days here in Perth so I have been staying indoors mainly.  Much too windy to be out with my toddler.  So, I have done a few short crochet project to keep me occupied.  These little headband will be given away as gift.

I found the pattern in the book The Complete Photo Guide to Crochet by Margaret Hubert and there is also a video tutorial which is found in this site.

For this headband, I used a 4mm size crochet hook, a black hair elastic and a very small amount of DK or 8 ply acrylic yarn from Moda Vera Marvel (deep pink).  Probably used less than 50m of yarn?

Stash-buster challenge crochet project: toddler belt, sash and/or scarf

A quick crochet project to do when you are just wanting to kill time.  I am slowly running down my crochet yarn supplies.

Here is another small crochet item I did in a snap for my little girl.  She wears it as a belt and sash around her waist.  When it is cooler outside, I wear it on her as a little scarf loosely around her neck by folding it in half then loop, taking care to make sure it is not a strangulation hazard when she's wearing it around neck as it is very long even it 22 inches.

For this project, I used 8 ply or DK yarn in deep pink colour, and a 4mm size crochet yarn.
The finished item is around 44 inches long x 1.75" wide.

The pattern can be found in this link.
