Stash-buster challenge project - crochet woman's headband and ear warmer

Crochet project:  The lacy four square motif headband and winter ear warmer (adult size)

You will need:

4mm size crochet hook
a black button
sewing needle and white thread
Cream acrylic yarn, 8 ply or DK, Moda Vera Marvel (from Spotlight)

A quick and easy crochet for beginner to intermediate skill level?

The pattern is taken from a published book called 201 crochet motifs, blocks, projects and ideas by Melody Griffiths.  Pattern is called "four square".

Stitch patterns used:  ch, ss, dc, htr, tr, tr2tog and tr3tog

Once the first motif was finished, I put it aside and then use join-as-you-go method to link the second motif to the first on one side.  You can start linking the outer most lacy corner when you crochet the round 4 on starting the third side of the motif.  Make four motifs to fit an adult head.

To join the lacy corner, I did ch 2, ss to the corner of first motif, then another ch 2 back onto the second motif.  Where only three chains are to be made for the motif, I did a link to the first motif by making ch 1, ss to lacy side, ch 1 back onto the second motif.

The flap to secure the headband has two  button holes and a loop to allow for tighter fit around the head for smaller head circumference.  To make the flap, I made two rows of 9 tr, then button holes and a loop of 12 chains from memory, just have to suit your button. Then sc all around the 12 chains before fastening off.

To finish off this headband, single crochet all around, 3 sc each lacy chain and 5 sc around the corners.

Finished measurements:
51cm length x 11cm height.  Each four square motif measures 11cm x 11cm roughly, including the single crochet border all around.
